Narrative

Little is known of Sarah Parson's early life, although on the 1851 census she claims birth in Broughton Hampshire.

Sarah married Moses REEVES in Jun 1826 at the Parish Chucth of St Andrew, in the neighbouring parish of Nether Wallop.

Known children of Moses Reeves and Sarah (nee Parsons) are
  1. Rebecca Reeves, bapt June 1829 at Over Wallop
  2. Elizabeth Reeves, bapt May 1832 at Nether Wallop
  3. Fanny Reeves, bapt November 1834 at Nether Wallop, marr Ambrose RIDDIT 1 in 1856
  4. Caroline Reeves, bapt August 1837 at Nether Wallop
  5. Jacob Reeves, b. reg. 2q 1840 in Stockbridge Registration District
  6. Sarah Reeves, b. reg. 1q 1845 in Stockbridge Registration District
On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Sarah (age 35) appears with Moses Reeves (36) in a family context, living at Rags Corner in Nether Wallop. In the same household are Rebecca (12), Elizabeth (8), Fanny (6), Caroline (3) and Jacob (1). All were born in the same county (Hampshire). Moses' occupation is shown as Agricultural Labourer.

Sharing the same dwelling, but enumerated seperately is Mary PARSONS (aged 70) whose occupation was noted as "Widow Ag Lab" but this has been crossed out. Might this be Sarah's mother or some other relative?

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Sarah appears under the name Sally (age 47) along with Fanny (16), Jacob (12) and Sarah (7) at Marsh in Nether Wallop. Sally is shown as a Widow who was born in Broughton Hants and her occupation is noted as "Pauper (Ag Lab's widow)". It is probable the death of her husband Moses Reeves is that recorded in Stockbridge Reg. Dist. in 3q 1846.

Sarah/Sally has, thus far, not been identified on the 1861 census return, nor is there a strongly matching death registration for her.

Research Notes

No further records of Sarah/Sally have, thus far, been identified. She may have died, remarried or simply adopted another name prior to the 1861 census.

Her daughter Fanny married in 1856 and Sarah is not part of Fanny's household on the 1861, 71, 81 or 91 census returns. Her son Jacob has not yet been found on the 1861 census, but he married in 1870 and has been identified on the 1871 & 1881 returns, again with no sign of his mother Sarah.

The HGS indices do note the baptism of Sarah PARSONS, daughter of James and Mary at Over Wallop in March 1798. If this is the current subject, then she was under reporting her age on the 1851 census by around six years. The parish of Nether Wallop lies between Over Wallop (her baptism) and Broughton (the place of her birth from the 1851 census), but the distances involved are but a couple of miles.

1 The name RIDDIT appears variously as Ridout, Ridditt and Riddett in connection with this family.
