According to a statement given by George K. Reaves for an 1875 Chancery Case in Halifax County, William R. Smith vs Jennie A. Smith, George states that he had removed from Halifax at some point and was living in Caswell County, North Carolina for a time.

The death in June 1875 of George's first wife, Sally R REAVES, is recorded in the annual list of deaths in the Southern District of Halifax County, Virginia. The Place of Death has been abbreviated to Mt C, presumably Mount Carmel, consistent with the 1870 census. She was 60 years old, was born in Halifax County and her parents are named as Thomas & Frances LACY. See Research Note 1 below.

According to 1880 census, Black Walnut, Halifax, VA, George K RIVES (sic)(60) was married to Martha C. Stanley (34) and had two children. Elijah (2) and Daniel or David (11/12). See Research Note 2 and also Research Note 3 below.

The death in February 1891 of George's third wife, M C REAVES, is recorded in the annual list of deaths in the Southern District of Halifax County, Virginia. The place of death is similarly given as Halifax Co, Va. She was 46 years old, was born in Halifax County and her parents are named as R + M HAILEY.

Research Notes

(1)   The same List of Deaths in the Southern District of Halifax County during 1875 also notes the death of Rhode REEVES, a single woman, age 70 years on the following line. They share the same place of death Mt C. (Mt Carmel). Rhode was the daughter of Daniel Reeves.

(3)  George's third wife Martha's maiden name may have been Hailey instead of Stanley. The death record of M. C. Reaves, wife of George Reaves lists her name as M. C. Hailey, born 1845, who died on 10 Feb 1891 in Halifax County, Virginia. Her parents are given as R. Hailey and M. Hailey.
