Portland, Me., April 20 - Tapping S. Reeve, 20, of Detroit, Mich, Bowdoin College student, was believed dying today at State Street Hospital, Portland, his skull pierced by a javelin thrown in practice yesterday at the college athletic field.
College authorities withheld the name of the student who threw the javelin. Reeve's father, Will S. Reeve, prominent Detroit insurance man, chartered an airplane and flew here from that city, arriving at the hospital last night.
Students at Bowdoin said the youth ran a quarter-mile from the field to the college gymnasium with the javelin embedded in his head.At the gymnasium, they said, he succeeded in pulling out the javelin himself before he collapsed. College authorities refused to confirm these reports.
Tapping is buried in the Lakeside Cemetery, Casco, Cumberland County, Maine.
