Last Honors to the Dead
The ceremonies connected with the funeral of Hon. Jeff B. Reeves yesterday occupied nearly the entire afternoon, and that he was universally esteemed the honors paid to his memory fully attest. His funeral was the largest that has occurred here in years, bar, lodge and individual strivings which could do him most honor, and all following his remains with bowed head and saddened hearts to the final resting place of all mortality however high or low.
At the hour for the funeral services the spacious Tabernacle was crowded to hear the touching words that fell from the lips of Rev. V. W. Tevis who spoke eloquently of the deceased and of the reward awaiting him.
Judge Keyes, Col. Stansifer and G. W. Cooper also spoke briefly, paying just tribute to the character of the deceased as a lawyer and as a citizen, the latter also giving a brief sketch of his life.
The floral offerings were elegant, the handsomest being a horse shoe of roses, given by committee from St. Johns Lodge.
At the grave the ceremonies were conducted by the Knights of Pythias according to their ritual, and were solemn and impressive.
Jefferson Bright Reeves was born in Rush county, Sept. 42, 1855. His father and mother, Wm. F. and Hannah Reeves, and three brothers and a sister survive him.
After a common school course he took the Junior course at what is now Butler University. He then entered the National Normal University at Lebanon, O., where he graduated July 2d, 1874. In 1875 he came to this city and began the study of law with Col. Stansifer, being admitted to the bar November 21, 1876. In 1882 he formed a law partnership with Charles Baker, which continued until the spring of 1885, when he became a member of the firm of Hacker, Strickland & Reeves.
Several years ago he married Miss Angeline Strickland, tow babies blessing the union, and on these three the loss will fall with a heaviness non but they can know.
Mr. Reeves served with prominence in both the regular and special sessions of the 54th General Assembly, and gave promise that he would become more widely known in the State, till cut down by death's untimely frost.
