Narrative

Although there is no way to positively identify the John Reeves of Pike County, Georgia as the son of William Reeves of Guilford County, North Carolina who died in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1816, there is much evidence to support the belief.

John Reeves may have been enumerated in Jones County, Georgia, in 1820 as John Reaves. His household consisted of one male aged 0-10; one male aged 10-16; one male aged 16-26; one male aged 26-45; two females under age 10; one female aged 10-16; and one female over age 45.

John Reeves had settled in Pike County by 1827, when he first appeared in the county tax digest. He remained there into the 1850s and was enumerated there in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census returns. In 1830, Reeves's household consisted of one male aged 15-20; one male aged 20-30; one male aged 40-50; one male aged 50-60; one female aged 10-15; one female aged 30-40; one female aged 50-60.

In John Reeves's household in 1840 were two elderly females, age 70-80 and age 80-90. John was age 60-70 with a female, possibly his wife, aged 50-60. It seems probable that one of these individuals was Mrs. Mary Wood, enumerated in a household adjacent to John Reeves in 1830, at which time she was age 80-90. Her relationship to John Reeves, if any, is unclear; she may have been a relative of Reeves or his wife. Two of his children seem later to have married into the Wood family.

John was enumerated in Pike County in 1850 and taxed there in 1851. Since John Reeves, Sr., and Jr., were found in Griffin District in the 1848 Pike County tax digest, it is possible that they were later in Spalding County after its creation.

Probable children of John Reeves and unknown wife:
  1. Unknown son, born before 1804, unmarried in 1820.
  2. John Reeves, Jr., b. c. 1808, m. Edy Davis, on 10 March 1831, in Harris County, Georgia. They were enumerated in Pike County, Georgia, in 1850 and in Goliad County, Texas, in 1860.
  3. Unknown daughter, born 1804-1810, unmarried in 1820.
  4. Unknown daughter, born 1810-1820, unmarried in 1820.
  5. Martha Reeves, m. James Wood 4 Sep 1836 in Pike County, Georgia.
  6. Robert Reeves, m. Mary Ann Wood 8 Jan 1835 in Pike County, Georgia.

Research Notes

Note that at the time of the 1830 Pike County, Georgia, Census, John had a male and a female aged 30-40 living in his household. This could be an older son and daughter (say born 1798-1800), a son and daughter-in-law, or some other perhaps unrelated individuals.
