James Southerland was born 25 Feb. 1792 in North Carolina and died 18 May 1873 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

In 1833, Martha "in contemplation to unite herself in marriage with a certain John L. Southerland" entrusted her slaves to George Bowers for her and her children.
