Narrative

Mary Ann (Marian) H. Reeves married William DeLoach in 1838 in Upson Co., GA. They were enumerated in Upson Co., GA, in 1840.

This William DeLoach was called "William DeLoach, Jr.," in the 1840 census and in tax records from GMD 537 of Upson County to distinguish him from his kinsman "William DeLoach, Sr.," who was about ten years older than he was. Upson Co., GA, tax digests indicate that William DeLoach, Jr., was taxed in GMD 537 in 1840, 1841, 1842, 1843, 1844, 1845, 1847, and 1848. The 1846 and 1849 digests have not been located. Many residents of GMD 537 were missed in the 1850 census enumeration, including this DeLoach family. As "William DeLoach, Jr.," he was taxed in GMD 537, Upson Co., GA, in 1852. The entry reads "William DeLoach, Jr. Agt." It would appear that either DeLoach was agent for Williamson Worthy, whose name appeared immediately above his, or that Worthy was agent for DeLoach.

Although missed in the 1850 federal census, they seem to have remained in the area until at least 1854, for their children appear on Upson Co., GA, poor school lists in the early 1850s:

1852 Upson Co., GA, Poor School List: Jesse Wilburn DeLoach, 13; Lilly Ann DeLoach, 11; Martha Ann DeLoach, 9.

1853 Upson Co., GA, Poor School List: Jesse W. DeLoach, Lily A. DeLoach, Martha A. DeLoach.

1853 Upson Co., GA, Poor School List, David Martin's List: Jesse W. DeLoach, Lilly Ann DeLoach, Martha Ann DeLoach.

1854 Upson Co., GA, Poor School List: Lilly Ann DeLoach, Martha Ann DeLoach, Jesse W. DeLoach.

They thereafter moved to Chambers and Randolph Counties, Alabama, where they remained.

The 1870 Chambers Co., AL, Census, Beat 5, Chambers Court House P.O., HH 119/119, showed: William DeLoach, 55, NC, Farming, $650/$300; Mary, 53, GA; Lila A., 22, At Home, GA; Caroline, 20, At Home, GA; Elaina, 18, At Home, GA; Antonet, 16, At Home, GA; Eliza J., 11, At Home, GA.

Mary's obituary appeared in The Roanoke Leader (Randolph Co., AL) on 29 April 1914: "Mrs. M.A. DeLoach died Sunday evening at Five Points at the age of 95 years, 5 months and 5 days. She had been a member of the Primitive Baptist church about 45 years. The funeral occurred at Mt. Hickory Monday afternoon, conducted by Elder J.T. Satterwhite. The deceased leaves six children living, among whom is Mrs. A.T. Still. Her descendants number over 100. J.H. DeLoach of this city is a grandson of the deceased. Relatives from this place attended the funeral."
