Narrative

Matilda REEVES is the second of seven known children of Edward Reeves and his wife Fanny (nee CROOK). Her birth was registered during the third quarter of 1856 and the GRO Index to Births confirms her mother's maiden name was Crook. She was presented for baptism by her parents Edward and Frances at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton on 25 January 1857 when she was named Matilda Ann Reeves. (Note this is the only known reference to her second given name.)

Matilda appears on the 1861 census with her parents, Edward and Fanny, at 66 Melbourne Street in the St Mary's district of Southampton. She was 4 years old and her place of birth is given as Southampton.

Matilda's mother dies prior to the 1871 census, when her father, Edward, is listed as a widower. His household at 22 Longcroft Street comprises just two individuals; Edward as HoH and his daughter Annie, age 12.

Since she is not with her father at the time of the 1871 census, it is highly probable she is the Matilda Reeves (age 15, born Southampton), who appears as a General Servant in the household of George H and Julia H PHILPS (sic) and their four children on Avenue Road, Southampton.

Nothing is presently known with certainty about Matilda's later life. There is no obvious marriage entry at FreeBMD in the Southampton area for Matilda and she has not been found on later census returns as a single woman.

However, it is strongly believed she is the same individual as Matilda REED, in which case Matilda married her cousin Samuel REEVES.
