Narrative

Nicey Caroline Reeves married Alexander Irwin in Upson Co., GA, in 1838.

They appeared in the 1840 Upson Co., GA, Census, GMD 537, two households from Elijah and Martin Reeves. The household consisted of two males under age 5, 1 male age 20-30, 1 female age 20-30, and one female age 60-70.

They appeared in the 1860 Upson Co., GA, Census, GMD 537, in HH 280/255: Alex Irwin, 54, Farmer, $400/$2859, GA; N. C., 46, female, GA; E. C., 19, male, Farm Labor, GA; J. M., 14, male, GA; A. C., 6, male, GA. (Interestingly, the family had the same neighbors in 1840 and 1860: Sutton Hardy's family on one side of them and Lemuel Torbert's on the other.)

Alexander apparently died between 1860 and 1870. In 1870, Caroline was enumerated in HH 840/840: Caroline Irvin, 64, GA, Farmer, $6000/$2000; John, 30, Farm Hand, GA; Elijah, 28, male, GA; James, 21,male, GA; Anderson, 17, male, GA.

The 1880 Upson Co., GA, Census showed the family still in GMD 537, Upson Co., GA, HH 186/186: James M. Irvin, 36, Farmer, GA/GA/GA; Nicy C., 60, Keeping House, GA/--/--. In HH 185/185 was her son Elijah C. Irvin, his wife Martha, and young sons named Daniel and George. A John W. Irvin, age 41, possibly an older son, was in HH 182/182 with wife Frances and sons John and Thomas.

Additional evidence to support Nicey's identity as Elijah Reeves's daughter comes from the 1900 Upson Co., GA, Census, where Marshall Irvin, 18, "Cousin," was living with John Reeves, 22, his mother Frances, 53, and his younger siblings. James Irvin appeared three households away.

Known children of Nicey Caroline Reeves and Alexander Irwin were:

1. Elijah C. Irwin, born c. 1841, GA, living Reeves District, Upson Co., GA, 1900. He married Martha J. Butler on 27 December 1876.
