Death of Stephen Reeves
It was with genuine sorrow that all received the news that Stephen Reeves had passed into the great and unknown beyond. Few men can live in a community a life-time without gaining a single enemy. Here was an honest, upright man, a worthy example for any young man to strive to imitate. He was loved by all and his four score and four years have been fill with kind acts and noble deeds.
Mr. Reeves was the eldest son of Howell Reeves and Pheobe Jane Howell and was born in East Palmyra, August 21, 1825. His parents moved to the Reeves farm, near Marion, when he was 12 years old.
Mr. Reeves received his education in the public schools and Marion Academy. August 8, 1862, he enlisted in Company B. 9th Heavy Artillery, N. Y. State Volunteers. As elsewhere, he proved faithful as a soldier and was in thickest of the fight at Cedar Creek, Cold Harbor, Menocacy and Winchester. July 6, 1865 he was discharged. Sept. 16, 1868, he was married to Mrs. Dolly Andrews of this town, by Rev. L. W. Olney, pastor of the Baptist church. About ten years ago he retired from the farm and moved to the place on Maple avenue.
Mr. Reeves was a charter member of Marion Grange and chaplain in John B. Burrurd Post of which he was the oldest member. This Post was established over thirty years ago and this is only the fourth death in the order during that time.
Mr. Reeves served the town as assessor 25 years and for many years was a member of the Board of Trustees of Marion Collegiate Institute.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Albert H. of Rochester, and Supervisor George S. of Marion; a step-daughter, Mrs. C. N. Jagger of East Palmyra; also three brothers, Amos of Rock Falls, Ill.; Harlan of Peary, Oklahoma; Charles of Benton Harbor, Mich.; and one sister, Mrs. Fannie Rice of Benton Harbor.
The funeral was largely attended at the house, Wednesday, 1:00 p.m., Rev. George Finely officiated. The G. A. R. Post attended in a body. The Post had charge of the exercise at the grave and the burial service was given from the ritual of that order.
