Narrative

Walter Ernest Reeves is the sixth of eight known children of Edward William REEVES and his wife Emily (nee PHILLIPS). FreeBMD notes his birth was registered during the second quarter of 1886 in the Lambeth Registration District. He was baptised in April 1886 at the Parish Church of All Saints, South Lambeth which was just round the corner from the family home in Hartington Road. Three of his older siblings Edith Rosina Ellen Reeves, George Henry Reeves and Florence Elizabeth Reeves were also baptised at the same time.

Walter appears on the 1891 census in his parent's household on Hartington Road, Lambeth. He is 5 years old and and was born in South Lambeth, London.

Walter would have been about eight when his mother died in 1894 and his father subsequently lost his job as a railway engine driver in August 1896. In September 1897, Walter's father Edward was admitted to the infirmary of the Wandsworth and Clapham Union Workhouse (where he remained until mid December 1899, before being re-admitted in January 1900). At the same time, along with his brothers Sidney and Albert, Walter was admitted to the Workhouse and the three brothers were quickly transferred to the North Surrey District School at Anerley in Surrey.

The records of the School show that at the end of October 1899 Walter was discharged into service with Mr Alexander HARVEY, a Baker at 231 Mare Street, Hackney.

At the time of the 1901 census, Walter is still working for Alexander Harvey on Mare Street in Hackney, appearing as one of 14 individuals in the Harvey household; there are eight Harvey family members and six further individuals including Walter. Walter is shown as being 15 years old, was born in Lambeth, London and is employed as a Baker's Apprentice. The relationship to Head of Household column is blank.

On the 1911 census Walter appears in the household of his married elder brother George H Reeves at 107 Stewarts Lane in Battersea, London. Walter is 25 years old, single and working as a Baker. His place of birth is noted as South Lambeth, London.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Walter E REEVES and Gertrude STANCER during the third quarter of 1913 in the Bingham Registration District of Nottinghamshire.
The known children of Walter Ernest Reeves and his wife Gertrude (nee Stancer) are
  1. Kathleen M Reeves, b.reg. 2q1914
  2. Walter E Reeves, b.reg. 4q1916
Both births were registered in the Lambeth Registration District.

The death of Walter's wife Gertrude is noted by FreeBMD as occurring during the second quarter of 1923. Walter died later the same year aged 37.
