Not much is known about William's childhood. On the 1870 census he states his father was born in North Carolina and on the 1880 and 1900 returns he indicates South Carolina. He remains consistent that his mother was born in Virginia.

From the 1870 and 1880 census William's age is consistently given as 42 and 52 suggesting he was born c1828. The 1900 census indicates he was born in November 1829. In 1870 he indicates he was born in North Carolina and in 1880 and 1900 in South Carolina.

He and Rovanna MOSS were married on 8 July 1858. He and Rovanna had eleven known children.
