According to his service record, Willis Watson Reeves served in Company D, 26th Mississippi Infantry, CSA. He was captured in February 1862 at Fort Donelson, held for 3 months, then exchanged. He is recorded as deserting his unit at least once. After his return to the regiment, Reeves was shot in the left hand — possibly intentionally — at Petersburg, Va., on 15 June 1864. He lost three fingers and was treated in a Confederate hospital in Richmond, VA. He was discharged not long after.

Long after the war, Willis W. Reeves was included in a picture of Confederate veterans whose memorabilia had been stolen from a library in Jackson, TN.
