According to extant deeds, Elijah first bought land in Maury County in 1818, a 38 1/2 acres piece of property from Edmond Harris.

In 1838, the Maury County School Census listed Elijah Rieves with 5 (between the ages of 6 and 21) children in school.

The 1840 census of Maury County, Tennessee lists Elijah Reeves/Rieves household as containing 1 Male ‹5 (Wiley), 1 Male 5-9, 1 Male 10-14 (Jeff), 2 Males 15-19 (Joel & unknownWilliam J.), 1 Male 50-59, 1 Female ‹5 (Angeline), 1 Female 5-9 (Mary), 1 Female 10-14, 1 Female 15-19 and 1 Female 40-49. This indicates that there are 3 children, 2 females and 1 male, which have yet to be identified. There is a statement in the notes included in the family bible of another son, Bose, but currently no documentation of this child has been located.

An entry from the local newspaper in 1871 mentioned that Elijah Rieves was one of several men in the 24th district of Maury County who were drawing on pension records for service in the War of 1812.

On May 18, 1872, the Whig and Tribune published the following:
ELIJAH RIEVES died Maury Co., Tenn. May 6, aged 81.¹

The Herald and Mail, 10 May 1872
It is a little remarkable that three persons, Mrs. Jesse S. Harris, of this town, and Mr. Elijah Rieves and Jackie Fleming Dobbins, died last Monday evening about the hour of six o'clock. Mr. Rieves was an old soldier of the war of 1812, and had been sick a long time.

Historical Sketch of Maury County states that "Among the early Pilots who navigated Duck river with flat-boats and rafts were....Elijah Rieves."
