Screven County, Georgia, Petition 20683010
Filed 16 Jun 1830
To the Honorable William W. Holt, one of the Judges of the Superior Courts of the State of Georgia, holding jurisdiction in Equity in the County of Scriven
Abstract: As guardian for John S. Rieves, Robert M. Williamson Jr. administered Rieves's property, which included seven slaves, by hiring out said slaves; in addition, he purchased four other slaves "with the funds of your orator." Rieves came of age in 1828 "and immediately called on the said Robert for a settlement of his accounts & transactions." In settling, Williamson held back two slaves, Anthony and Gill, worth $1,000. Rieves protests, stating that he is entitled to Anthony and Gill and that he "was greatly wronged & defrauded and that the said Robert M. was greatly indebted to your orator." Williamson has refused to settle the matter, claiming that the settlement was fair. Rieves asks the court for an inventory of the estate and for an injunction to prevent Williamson from engaging in any additional transactions involving the disputed property.

In May of 1836, John S. Rieves received a land warrant for 500 acres in Screven County, Georgia.

John Simeon Rieves was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Screven County from 1833-1837 and again in 1845, dying in office.
