From Reliques of the Rives:
Dr. Burwell Edward Rives was the fifth son of his father, Rev. John Edwards Rives, to participate in the War for Southern Independence, serving as 1st sergeant in Co. K, 43rd Georgia Infantry under his brother’s command. In 1868 he set out with his family on the overland trail by ox-team for California,
settling near Downey in that State, where he practiced medicine for which he had been educated in Georgia.


Headstone says he was born in 1837, but census indicates 1839.
