Charles William Rives, known as Will Rives, was born May 27, 1857, at the old Rives’ homestead, six miles northeast of Greenfield, Illinois, where he spent almost the whole of his life. His education was received in the schools of Greenfield and Jacksonville, and at Wesleyan College in Bloomington, Illinois. For several years he engaged in the mercantile business at Rock Bridge, Illinois, but later returned to Greenfield and died February 28, 1915, at Thistledown Farm, less than a mile from where he was born. He was a man of genial disposition and spotless integrity, and left behind him a host of friends.
