David Edward Rives, born January 17, 1838, received a common school education and was a farmer through out his life until his death on May 11, 1928. He served from 1861-2 as a private in Co. E, 26th N. C Inf., C. S. A. Upon the expiration of his period of voluntary enlistment he hired a substitute and worked for the Confederate Government during the remaining years of the war in the transportation of iron from a mine at Ore Hill, N. C. David E. Rives married, 1st, in 1870, Sarah Norfleet Bynum, daughter of Mark and Mary (Clegg) Bynum, of Chatham county, N. C. Following her death in 1878, he married, 2nd, August 11, 1881, Julia Catherine Moore, daughter of Chesley Moore, of Alamance, N. C.
