From Reliques of the Rives:
Edwards Rives became a prominent farmer in Chatham county, North Carolina, where he passed his life. Born in Virginia, March 19, 1775, he accompanied his parents from Mecklenburg county, Virginia, to Chatham county, North Carolina, and was one of the executors of his father's will in 1809. Though he is not known to have been licensed to practice medicine he was frequently called upon, in an emergency, and on account of a practical knowledge which he had acquired, to bleed a patient or to extract a tooth. He married in 1800, Mary Ann Alston (b. June 9, 1785, d. Sept. 1867, youngest daughter of William Alston, a prominent citizen of Chatham county, and his wife, Sarah Yeargan who died in 1786 and is buried near Pittsboro, N. C. William Alston, who was the youngest son of Joseph John and Elizabeth (Chancy) Alston, served as Clerk of the Chatham Court from May, 1774, to August, 1776. He died 1788 at Sulphur Springs, Va., where he is buried).¹ Edwards Rives died February 2, 1840, in Chatham county, and is buried with his wife in the old Rives' graveyard at his home about seven miles from Goldston, N. C, now included in what is known as the "Bynum Place." The stone marking his grave "has crumbled away to such an extent that all information thereon is destroyed." His will, dated March 19, 1830, was probated February 1840, in Chatham county.
Childs incorrectly stated the date of Edwards's will. It was from 1839, not 1830. Edwards named James Franklin Rives, Robert E Rives, William Alston Rives, John Joseph Rives, Martha K. Goldson, Ann P. Harris, and Mary Edwards Rives as children in his will.
