George Edwin Rives was born November 11, 1842, in Petersburg, Virginia, and now resides at Wakefield in Surry county. He served four years in the Confederate Army as a private with Co. C, 5th Virginia Cavalry, and Co. H, 13th Virginia Cavalry, part of the time as a courier for Gen. Fitzhugh Lee. He married September, 1865, Mary Virginia Loudon, of Portsmouth, Virginia, daughter of Herbert Farrand Loudon, 1819-1857, and his wife, Missouri Jarvis, of Washington, D. C, 1826-1856, daughter of James Jarvis (son of John Jarvis and his wife, Anne Green, John being a son of John Jarvis and his wife, Elizabeth Meecham) and his wife, Mary Powell Pullin.

Death Certificate says he was born in 1843. Census seems to imply 1842.

George lived later in life with his daughter Blanche Pond's family.
