Narrative

From Reliques of the Rives:
On May 24, 1757, he received, as already noted, a deed of gift from Thomas Rives, his father, of 50 acres of land in Brunswick county on the southside of the Meherrin river, and on June 27, 1764, he patented 128 acres in Brunswick on the southside of the Meherrin river which was described as "touching his own line." In 1775 he sold for £115 to John Parham 176 acres of land, which evidently included the two foregoing tracts, the witnesses to which were Sterling Davis, Frederick Davis, James Wilson, and Thomas Davis. Harmon Rives made his will which was recorded in Brunswick county, as follows:
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN: I Harmon Rives of the County of Brunswick and parrish of Meherrin being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory Thanks be to God for the same and considering how frail and uncertain our Mortal life is here on Earth do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, Viz: FIRST, of all I bequeath my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it me to dispose of at his blessed Will and pleasure hoping for a joyful meeting of Soul and Body at the general Resurrection of the Just, and my body to be committed to the Ground from whence it was taken to be buried in a decent Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors And as touching my worldly estate which it hath pleased the Almighty God to bless me with here on earth, I dispose of as followeth viz: ITEM, I give and bequeath to my Cousin Benjamin Rives all my whole estate after all my debts are paid to him and the heirs of his body, and for want of such heir my desire is that my estate be equally divided between my Brother William Rives's children, to them and their heirs forever. And I make and ordain my Brothers William Rives and Benjamin Rives my whole and sole executors of this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the third day of January 1776.

At a Court held for Brunswick County the 22nd day of January 1776. This will was proved according to law by the oaths of John Jeter a witness thereto and ordered to be recorded.
