Colonel James Franklin Rives was, like his brother, Robert Edwards Rives, a member at one time of the North Carolina Legislature. His title was derived from his command of a regiment of North Carolina militia before the War Between the States. Col. Rives married in 1843 Elizabeth, daughter of Robin Marsh, a well-to-do citizen of Chatham county, and his wife, Lucy Waddill.
