James Philips Rives attended the University of North Carolina for two years, after which he engaged in farming in Edgecomb, N. C., where he made his home and where he was a prominent citizen of the county. He married December 19, 1877, Pattie Battle Marriott (d. 1910), daughter of Dr. Robert and Tempe Ann Marriott, of Rock Mount, N. C. Mr. Rives, who was born at Battleboro, N. C., died December 19, 1927, at Rocky Mount, N. C.
