James Robert Rives, one of the most prominent and best known members of the family in North Carolina, was born in Chatham county in that State on May 8, 1865. He was educated at Trinity College and, after teaching and farming, entered the real estate business in Sanford, North Carolina. Elected to the North Carolina Legislature in 1905, he became a member of the State Senate in 1907. The following year he removed to Lee county where he became a member of the county court. Mr. Rives, who is a leader of the Methodist Church in Sanford, married March 11, 1888, Annie Jane Moffitt.
