Reliques states he "was born in Hall county, Georgia; attended Dahlonega College, 1873-75; and was later a student of music under private teachers in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Rives, who taught music for a number of years in South Carolina and Georgia, died September 8, 1928, at Winder, Ga."

Death Certificate gives his name as "James A. Rives." It also says he was born 14 Oct 1854, but census indicates 1856.
