AN OLD CITIZEN
Finally Passes Quietly Away After Many Days of Sickness.
FUNERAL SUNDAY AT 1 P. M.
Mr. John W. Rives died Saturday night at 8:15 o'clock at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. B. F. Briggs, at the age of 85 years. He had been almost helpless for a long time and the death had been expected.
The funeral occurred at the residence of Mrs. Briggs at one o'clock Sunday afternoon and the remains were interred by the side of his two wives and several children at the old family grave yard 2 1/2 miles west of the city.
Mr. Rives leaves two children, Mr. S. A. Rives, Prague, Okla., and Mrs. B. F. Briggs, of this city, to mourn his death.
Mr. Rives was a member of the Baptist church and the funeral was conducted by Elder Pettie and Rev. C. A. Waterfield.
Mr. Rives was born in Warren County, N. C., December, 3rd, 1818 and moved to Montgomery County, Tenn., with his parents when a small boy. He moved to Graves county in 1850 and settled west of the city. He has been a continuous resident ever since.
Mr. Rives was a good citizen and had many friends in the county.

He moved to Grave county in 1850 and settled west of the city.

He accompanied his father to Tennessee, later removing to Graves county, near Mayfield, Ky., where he became “one of the most progressive farmers of the county.” In 1838 he married Ist, Mrs. Lucy Brown (Collins) Moss (a widow with four children, William, Lucy Brown, John and James Moss. She was a sister of Thomas Collins and Polly, wife of Thomas Rives). After the death of his first wife on July 20, 1856, John W. Rives married 2nd, September 1, 1857, Sarah Elizabeth Coates.
