Nathan Granville Rives was born in Davidson county, Tennessee, in 1834, and became a successful building con tractor in Nashville. In May, 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Tennessee Cavalry under General Joe Wheeler throughout the four years of war. In 1889 Mr. Rives was elected to the Nashville City Council and served two terms. He died in Nashville on October 25, 1903. Mr. Rives, who was a devout member of the Central Baptist Church of his city, married March 27, 1856, Elizabeth Jennings (b. Feb. 24, 1841; d. Feb 28, 1924), daughter of William Jennings (1810-1850), and his wife, Mrs. Maria Fair (Starkey) Donelson.

Funeral of Mr. Rives.
The funeral of Nathan G. Rives, the well-known contractor, who died Sunday at his home in South Nashville, will take place this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Central Baptist Church. Mr. Rives was 69 years old. He was a Confederate veteran, and made a fine record as a gallant soldier. After the close of the war he returned to Nashville, and followed his trade, being a carpenter and builder, and soon established an excellent business. Mr. Rives was elected a member of the City Council in 1889, and served two years. He was a member of the Central Baptist Church, and his life was an exemplary one. Mr. Rives was married in 1856 to Miss Elizabeth Jennings and is survived by his wife and the following children: G. W. Rives, Mrs. O. F. Nelson, Frank Rives, Mrs. Nora L. Castleman, Jessie W. Rives and Murray Rives.
