From Reliques of the Rives:
Paulina Cabell Rives was born at Warminster on March 11, 1796; married at "Oak Ridge" in March, 1814, Major Richard Pollard, U. S. A.; and died at Newburg, New York, in 1858. "In her youth she was distinguished for her matchless beauty, in later years for her highly cultured intellect and all the virtues which made home loved and happy."
Her husband, Richard Pollard, was born in King and Queen county, Virginia, in 1790; was graduated from William and Mary College with the degree of B. C. L. in 181 1 ; appointed Captain, 20th Infantry, U. S. A., April 14, 1812; fought at Craney Island; promoted Major of 21st Infantry, December 14, 1813. After his marriage Major Pollard resigned from the Army, and moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he engaged in business, but met with heavy losses by the depreciation of real estate, and took up the practice of law. From 1835 to 1843 he was Charge d'Affaires of the United States in Chile. On his return from this diplomatic post, he resided for the remainder of his life at his home, "Altavista," in Albemarle county, Virginia, which his courtly address, distinguished manners, and genial hospitality rendered elegant and charming to all whom he received there. He died in Washington, D. C, February 19, 1851.
