Research Notes

This family is very confusing since the parents of Thomas A, Cherry are documented as Samuel Cherry and Rebecca Rives, yet it appears he then married a Rachel Rebecca Rives.

Thomas A. Cherry was bound over to Dabney Phillips when five-and-a-half years of age and raised in the Phillips home as a "bound boy" until the age of 18.

On the May 1866 Muhlenburg County marriage certificate of Thomas A. Cherry and Rebecca Rives, Thomas's father's given name is listed as Samuel Cherry, deceased. Rebecca Rives' parents are listed as Rebecca (Taylor) and Richard Rives. Richard Rives signed the document to verify the information on the license.

Based upon the information in the marriage license, it appears that Thomas A. Cherry married his cousin, daughter of his uncle Richard Rives.
