He resided before the War Between the States near Greenfield in Illinois, and afterwards in Dickson county, Tenn., where he died. During the war he served as a private in Walker's Legion, Co. K, 2nd (Robinson’s) Tenn. Inf., while his only known son served in the Union Army. Richard B. Rives is said to have married four times but only the names of his third wife, Lucy Rodway, of Holly Springs, Miss., and his fourth wife, Mrs. Rena Ladd, are known. He is understood to have had children only by his first, third, and fourth marriages.
