From Reliques of the Rives:
William Augustus Rives was born in 1802 in Dinwiddie county, Virginia, and died in 1875 in Tennessee. In 1823 he received from the estate of his father by will, 566 acres of land on the Turkey Egg Road in Dinwiddie. In 1826 he was in receipt of 90 acres near Beaver Pond Creek from the "estate of Chas. Whitmore" [his father—in—law] by a decree of court. The following year he was deeded 100 acres by Peter Harris. In 1828 he is listed as the owner of eight slaves. William A. Rives moved somewhat later to Fayette county, Tennessee, where his will dated June 16, 1874, was recorded in 1875, in which he makes bequests to his granddaughter, Lillian, of $4,000, and to his wife, Mary P. Rives, of 432 acres "on the Somerville Road." He married, 1st, Dionetia Whitmore; 2nd, his cousin, Mary Rogers, but is known to have had issue only by his first wife.
According to Reliques, his son Richard H. Rives attended Emory and Henry College in Virginia, 1841-1845.
