At the age of 17, Richard Roberts enlisted in Company B of the 53rd Georgia Infantry Division of the CSA on 9 May 1864. After the Civil War, he returned to his parents home where he is listed in the 1870 of Leon County, Florida.

Returning to Newton County, Georgia, he married there in 1877 and appears to have remained there until his death sometime after 1910 for he is recorded there in the census of that year.
