The will of his father Robert mentions "John Reve my sonne deceased by his Last Will and testament bering date the twentie daye of July in the yere of our lord god a thousand fyve hundred xlvth.... give and bequeath to Robert Reve Richard Reve and Thomas Reve his sonnes...and to Mary Reve Margaret Reve and Jane Reve his daughters." Robert also mentions the son John, son of his deceased son John. As transcribed, John's will would be dated 20 Jul 1545 according to Robert's will. There seems to be some discrepancy here as a chancery case which Childs quotes in Relqiues refers to John's will being dated in the first year of Edward VI's reign (1547). The roman numerals in Robert's will are difficult to read so 1547 may be the correct year. At any rate, his son's will has yet to be found.
From the The visitation of Dorsetshire, A.D. 1565:
John Ryves of Damory Court, co. Dorset, Gent., mar. Amy, da. to ... Hervy of Launston, co. afores'd, and by her had issue, — John, her eldest son; Robert, second son; Richard, third son; Thomas, fourth son; Mary, mar. to William Adeyn alias Barbett of Dorchester; Margaret, mar. to Richard Lawrence of Stephilton; Jane mar. to Thomas Sidnam of Wynford Egle, Esq.
John Ryves is described as being of Damary Court. According to Henry VIII Musters (an inventory of weaponry in the possession of the English population), which was completed in 1542, lists John as 'Jn Ryvys at Damercourt' and of owning 'harness for 2 men horse'. This would seem to indicate that John was living at Damary Court, probably as a tenant, some seven years before his father purchased it. John pre-deceased his father Robert and therefore his son John became heir to his grandmother, Robert's widow Joan.
Although reporting historical information by this date, the visitations of 1623 give some helpful information which accords with the earlier visitation from 1565. Concerning John and Robert, the children of John and Amy it gives the following information:
- John Rives of Damery Court in com. Dorset (m.) Elizab. filia Joh'is Marvin de fountell in com. Wiltes. (John Rives of Damery Court in County Dorset (m.) Elizabeth daughter of John Marvin of Fontell in County Wiltshire)
- Rob'tus Ryves de Randleston in com. Dorset 2 filius (m.) Margareta filia et coh: Will'mi Gillett de Kingston in Insula Purbeck. (His 2nd son Robert Ryves of Randleston (m.) Margaret daughter of ? William Gillett of Kingston in the Isle of Purbeck)
