Wayne County, TN


History

Wayne County was established 24 November 1817 from Hickman and Humphreys Counties. Early records may be found under Hickman or Humphreys Counties. It was named in honor of Gen. Wayne, "Mad Anthony," of Revolutionary fame.

The first settlers of Wayne County were mainly from the older counties of Middle Tennessee and from North and South Carolina. The early settlements were made on North Carolina military grants, occupants' claims and warrants. Goodspeed's History of Wayne County lists a Thomas Reeves as one of the early settlers of the area who came prior to 1820.

Modern Day Adjacent Counties

Wayne County is bordered by Perry, Lewis, Lawrence, Hardin and Decatur counties in Tennessee along with Lauderdale County, Alabama.
