More DNA Success

                  by Beverly Watson

Although he hasn’t joined The Reeves Project to date, the test results for William Selah Reeve, a new member of the Reeves DNA Project, have clarified questions regarding the possible family connections for two early Reeve settlers to Long Island, New York. A 1658 Long Island deposition told the interesting story of a group of adventurers who came to the Chowan country of North Carolina from the Caribbean islands known as the Summer Isles in 1636 and then sailed further up the Atlantic coast to Long Island where they permanently settled. The initial group included a James Reeve and while in North Carolina they met with another group which included a Thomas Reeve. Both parties settled in Long Island where James and Thomas Reeve lived the rest of their lives. Although there was speculation that they were brothers, no family connection has ever been proven until now. The new member of the Reeves DNA Project, William Selah Reeve, descends from James Reeve and his DNA is a match to that of descendants of Thomas Reeve, including Charles S Reeves and Richard A Reeves. Supplementing traditional research with DNA testing has again yielded a genealogical success.
