Norfolk County (extinct), Virginia

Norfolk Co., VA (Extinct)

History

Norfolk is an extinct county in South Hampton Roads. The county existed from 1691 to 1963.

In 1636, the southern portion of Elizabeth City Shire, one of the original eight shires, became New Norfolk County. The area was divided again in 1637 into Upper and Lower Norfolk counties. In 1691, Lower Norfolk County was divided into Norfolk County and Princess Anne County. After 1691, Norfolk remained more or less intact for over 200 years. Portsmouth became an independent city in 1858, but remained the county seat of Norfolk County. In 1871 Norfolk became an independent city, as did South Norfolk in 1919. Additional territory was lost over the next several years and in 1963 the city of South Norfolk and the remaining area of Norfolk County joined to create the City of Chesapeake.
