NarrativeSometime after 1820, the children of Samuel Reeves, disappeared from the records of Rowan County. During the years before 1820, there were numerous deeds executed among the heirs of Samuel Reeves selling property inherited from his estate, but after 1820 they no longer appear in either the deed records or census.
The 1830 census of St. Francois County, Missouri which is just southwest of the city of St. Louis list a Bennet A. Reaves along with a William Reaves living there. By 1840, they are both listed in the census of Cape Girardeau County which is only a short distance from St. Francois County. Neither Bennet, nor William are listed in any records after that 1840 census.
Land Warrant #5740 for 40 acres in Cape Girardeau, Missouri was issued by the Bureau of Land Management General Land Office at Jackson to Bennett Abner Reeves on 1 Aug 1838. That BLM office had previously issued warrant #2707 for 40 acres in the same county on 20 Jan 1827 to Bennet A. Reeves.
Bennet died sometime before 15 Jul 1842 when his widow, as Hortensia Reeves married Chauncy Sheppard in Cape Girardeau.
Based upon the 1830 and 1840 census, Bennet A. Reeves had at least 5 children - 3 girls and 2 boys, whose identities are currently unknown.
