Narrative

Very little information is available regarding the life of Mary Reeves Allen. There are deed records in Wake County NC that relate to her husband Bartlett Allen but the only mention of Mary, is in the probate records of her father, William Reeves. There is a Power of Attorney from Bartlett and Mary Allen to Jesse B. Geer (nephew of Mary Reeves Allen) to act on their behalf in the settlement of William Reeves' estate recorded in Madison County, Kentucky Deed Book P, Pg 211. Subsequent to this POA, Jesse B. Geer executed the deed "Reeves Heirs to Reeves" on their behalf wherein all of William Reeves' children sell their interests in his land to his youngest child, Jeremiah. That deed is recorded in Madison County in Deed Book Q, pgs 7, 8, 9.

At present, no definitive documentation has been found as to the identity of the children of Mary Reeves; however the following would appear to be some of those children based upon research of the Downs and Allen families of Wake County when compared against the ages and sexes of the children of Mary Reeves as listed on the 1800 U.S. Federal Census for Wake County:

Presumed child of Mary Reeves and Benjamin Downs -
  1. Mary Downs
Presumed children of Mary Reeves and Bartlett Allen -
  1. Frances Allen
  2. Elizabeth Allen
  3. James A. Allen
  4. Thomas Allen
  5. Susan Allen
  6. Martha Allen "Patsey"
Mary Reeves Allen was still living in October of 1835 when Bartlett Allen mentions in his RW pension statement that his wife is also in frail health and is almost as old as he. No further mention has been found of Mary after that date.
