This Indenture of Lease made this seventh day of July in ye fourteenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain France & Ireland King Defender of the faith &c Annoque Domini one thousand seven hundred & forty between John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife of St Stephens Parish in ye County of Northumberland & Colony of Virginia of the one part & Ellis Gill of the same Parish County & Colony of the other part Witnesseth that the sd John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife for & consideration hereafter expressed hath granted bargained sould demised & to farm lett & by these presents doth Grant Bargain sell Demise & to farm Lett unto ye sd Ellis Gill his heirs &c for and during the sd John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife natural lives to commence from the day of this date one hundred & fifty acres of land more or less lying & being in the Parish & County aforesd on ye head of Merriners Creek ...into Great Wicocomoco River beginning at ye north head of ye sd Creek & running northerly along ye Gleeb live or the land formerly Coll. George Coopers to the head of a Branch runing into the head of Gilbern? Creek thence easterly along ye line of Thomas Gill late decd and the land of John Cob & thence southerly to ye head of the sd Marriners Creek & along westerly on ye sd Creek unto the first begining for one hundred & fifty acres of land more or less it being part of the tract of land whereon Capt Sanders Decd lived & left by him to ye sd John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife together with all houses orchards & gardens fences pasture feedings woods and ?woods waters watercourses & all other conveniences to the sd Granted Land & premises belonging or in any wise appertaining to have & to hold the sd one hundred & fifty acres of land more or less unto him the sd Ellis Gill for & during the term of the sd John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife naturall lives provided nevertheless yt it is hereby ? that the sd Ellis Gill as aforesd the ? of John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife lives as aforesd upon ye sd land hereby granted have Liberty of the timber on ye sd land to doe what he will with it as if the sd land was to be his for ever in consideration whereof the sd Ellis Gill for himself as aforesd doth hereby covenant promise grant & agree to & with the sd John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife to sattisfy & pay in hand one thousand pounds of lawfull tobo & to pay the debts ? now dew of the sd Land & to plant one hundred apple trees upon ye sd land & to build a thirty foot tobo house & twenty foot dwelling house on ye sd land within the term of time & to pay yearly the just sum of five hundred pounds of lawfull tobo to the sd Elizabeth Reeves for and during the afforsd term of her natural life the sd John Reeves & Elizabeth his now wife doth oblige themselves to warrant & defend the sd lands from ye claime or claimes of any person or persons whatsoever during the sd term of their sd naturall lives as aforesd unto the sd Ellis Gill in testimony of all these ? the sd partys have hereunto their hands & seals the day & year first above written.

Memorandum that Quiet & peaceable possession of the within mentioned land & premises was this day Given & delivered by the within named John Reeves & Elizabeth his wife first partys to this indenture unto the within named Ellis Gill by the delivery of ? & ? upon ye sd land on ye July ye 14th 1740 this indenture of lease was acknowledged in Northumberland County Court by John Reeves & Elizabeth his wife unto Ellis Gill on whose motion ye same is admitted to Record
