KNOW all men by these presents that I Thomas Reeves Late of the County of Augusta for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds current money to me in hand paid by John Herndon of the county of Spotsylvania have this day bargained and sold unto the said John Herndon Two slaves Viz, Will and Hambleton which slaves I do hereby warrant and the Title thereof will defend unto the said John Herndon his heirs Executors Administrators or assigns against me my heirs Executors or Administrators or against the Claim of all and every person or persons whatsoever Upon This Condition Nevertheless that if the said Thomas Reeves shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said John Herndon his heirs or assigns the aforesaid sum of one hundred pounds (Together with Lawfull Interest thereon) by the tenth day of October Next, then the above bill of sale to be void, Otherwise it shall and may be Lawfull for the said John Herndon his heirs or assigns to take and sell the said slaves at Public auction Rendering the Overplus (if any) to the said Thomas Reeves his Heirs &c In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of July 1768 ~Test

This Deed of Mortgage from Thomas Reeves to John Herndon was proved by the Oath of Joseph Brock Gent a witness thereto, and ordered to be recorded.
