Transcript

This Indenture made this xxist day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty four Between Nathaniel Rives of the County of Greensville of the one part & Samuel Gilliam of the same County of the other part Witnesseeth that the said Nathaniel Rives for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred pounds current money of Virginia t him in hand paid by the said Samuel Gilliam the receipt whereof the said Nathaniel Rives doth hereby acknowledge have granted Bargained sold aliened enfeoff'd and confirmed & by these presents do grant bargain sell alien enfeoff and & confirm unto the said Samuel Gilliam his heirs & assigns forever all that certain tract piece or parcel of land containing by estimation four hundred acres & a half situate lying & being in the county of Sussex and lying on the south side of Harry's swamp it being all that entire tract of land which he the said Nathaniel Rives lately purchased of Gardner Harwell by Deed bearing date the (blank) day of (blank) last which deed is duly recorded in Court of the aforesaid County of Sussex & is bounded as in the same is particularly express'd reference being thereunto had will more fully appear likewise one water Grist mill on the said Harry's swamp together with one acre of land lying on the north side of the said swamp adjoining the said Mill & which was formerly laid of for erecting the said mill on to have and to hold the said four hundred & a half acres of land & water grist mill with all & singular the appertenances thereunto belonging unto him the said Samuel Gilliam his heirs & assigns to the only proper use & behoof of him the said Samuel Gilliam his heirs & assigns forever and he the said Nathaniel Rives the said land & premises with all & singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging unto him the said Samuel Gilliam his heirs and assigns against him the said Nathaniel Rives and his heirs & against all & every other person or persons whatsoever shall & will warrant & forever defend by these presents In witness whereof the said Nathaniel Rives hath hereunto set his hand & affixed his seal the day & year above written

Commentary

This is the land bought by Nathaniel the previous year in an earlier deed. This could be Nathaniel Rives who later moved to South Carolina or Nathaniel Rives who later went to Henry County.
