In the name of God amen - I John Rhodes of the County of Rockingham and State of North Carolina being very sick & weak of body but of perfect mind & memory thanks be to God for the same & calling to mind the uncertainty of this life & that it is appointed for all men once to die I do hereby make order & appoint & ordain this to be my last will & testament & do hereby revoke and disallow of any other that have been made by me before & do establish this to be my last will & testament & first I give & bequeath my soul to God and my body to be decently buryed in the earth at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named & now for what worldly goods it has pleased God to bless me with I do hereby dispose of in manner & form following, & first that all debts that I do owe in truth & justice I allow to be payed viz
                Item - I give & bequeth unto my beloved wife Fortune Rhodes all the effects and chattels of every kind of things that she bought at the vandue of the effects that did belong to the estate of her former husband Malychia Reeves all things she bought at the vandue to have to her use -
                Item - I give and bequeth unto the heirs of my firs born son Hezekiah Rhodes one French crown (sic ?) to their use -
                Item - I give and bequeth unto my son Joseph Rhodes one French crown (sic ?) to his use.
                Item - I give and bequeth unto Sarah Rhodes my daughter one negroe named Phib (sic?) & one feather bed and furniture to her use.
                Item - I give and bequeth unto my son Samuel one negroe man named Chance for his use
                Item - I give & bequeath unto my son Absolom one negroe man named Bob to his use & there after (sic ?) there is enough sold to pay all just debts I then allow the remainder of my estate to be equally divided betwixt my two sons Samuel & Absolem by way of evaluation of my Executors valuing the whole of the remainder & I do hereby appoint my son John Rhodes & my son-in-law William Reeves Executors of this my last will and testament & have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal this fifth day of October Anno Domini 1791.
