Transcript

I George Rives of the County of Sussex and State of Virginia do hereby make my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say
1st. I desire my negroe slave Peter to be sold after my decease and out of the money arising therefrom all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid
2nd. After the payment of all my debts and funeral expenses I give to my wife Sarah Rives during her natural life the following property that is to say, one half of all my land and plantation including the buildings, the following negroe slaves Ruffin, Burwell, Davy, Monroe, Daniel, Aggy, Milly and her chils Hannah, Nancy and Lucy with the increase of the females thereof also all my stock of every kind say Horses, Cattle, oxen, hogs, sheept &c except those herein after named, also four feather beds and furniture together with all my other households and kitchen furniture (except my Sohpa, small walnut dining table and one dozen cain bottom chairs). I also give her one years provision for herself and family.
3rd. I give to my son John Eldgridge Rives the following negroe slaves with the future increase of the females thereof Jack, Jeff, Martha and her chils Anna, my riding horse (Sam) Sattle, and bridge, the other half of my land not given to my wife until until (sic) her death at which time I give him the half willed to my wife Sarah including the buildings two feather beds and furniture a small walnut table, Sopha and one dozen cain bottom chairs to him and his heirs forever after paying my son George at the death of my wife five hundred dollars in lien of land.
4th. I give to my son Edwin Williamson Rives at the death of my wife the other half of my plantation after paying to my son George five hundred dollars and at the death of my wife I give all the property devised to her and not herein disposed of to be equally divided between my two sons George and Edwyn W. Rives to them and theirs forever.
5th. I give to my son Thomas Peterson Rives at the death of my wife Sarah a negroe slave Lucy with her future increase to him and his heirs forever.
6th. I give to my daughter Amy Goodwyn Browder during her natural life two negroe slaves Suckey and Anna together with their future increase and at her death I give them to the heirs of her body.
Lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my son John Eldridge and Thomas Peterson Rives my executors to this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all other or former wills or testaments by me heretofore made and it is my wish that no security be exacted of my executors. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 11th day of Decr in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen.

At a Court held for Sussex County the 5th day of March 1840. The last Will and Testament of George Rives deceased was presented into Court and proved by the oaths of Thomas Gee, Frederick Temple and Thomas W Rives the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Thomas P Rives and of the executors therein named who made oath and entered into bond according to law certificate is granted him for attaining a probate thereof in due form Teste
