Transcription

THIS INDENTURE made and entered into this 6th Septemr 1825 Between John U. Reeves & Winifred his wife of the County of Prince William & State of Virginia of the one part and Jane Williams of sd. County & State of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John U. Reeves & Winifred his wife for and in consideration of the sum of ten dollars to him the said John U. Reeves in hand paid at & before the ensealing & delivery hereof have granted bargained & sold, and by these presents, to grant bargain & sell unto the said Jane Williams a certain lot of land in Brentsville No 68 numbered sixty eight in the plan of the town, and all the hereditaments and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining To Have & to hold the said lot, with the said hereditaments and appurtenances unto her the said Jane Williams and her heirs & assigns forever and the said John U. Reeves & Winifred his wife for themselves & their heirs do by these presents warrant and forever defend the said bargained premises to the said Jane Williams her heirs & assigns against the claim of all and every person or persons whatsoever. In Witness whereof the sd. John U. Reeves & Winifred his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the date above written.

This deed from John U. Reeves to Jane Williams was acknowl.d by the sd. Reeves & admitted to record.

Commentary

There is no explanation in the deed book as to why Winifred Reeves did not sign the deed and there was no record that she relinquished her dower rights. Note that the witnesses are noted as only witnessing the signature of John U. Reeves.

Jane Dawe Williams, widow of John Williams, was the sister of the Court Clerk of PWC Phillip D. Dawe.
