Whereas Anthony Rives our father late of Rutherford County State of Tennessee for the consideration of the sum of Five hundred and fifty dollars to him in hand paid, did, on the 21st of December 1825 sell & convey to William Ledbetter, a negro boy slave for life named Nelson then about 18 years of age, and whereas we, Orville C Rives and Henry Rives as well as the other children and heirs of said Anthony Rives & his wife Mary Rives formerly Mary B. Green have a claim to said boy at the death of our said mother. Now to secure the title to sd boy to the said said William Ledbetter in consideration of the sum paid by him as aforesaid, and of the further sum of one dollar to us in hand paid, we have agreed and do hereby receive said boy Nelson as part of the negro property coming to us from sd Anthony Rives our father, at our mother's death, and agree to be charged with his value in the general distribution hereafter to be made between sd Anthony's children and & heirs of his said wife & hereby sell & convey the said boy to the said William Ledbetter and his heirs forever and agree to warrant and defend the title to him forever, ourselves and from all persons whatever. Given under our hands & seals this 17th day of July 1829

Fayette County} I do hereby certify that the within Bill of sale from Orville C. Rives to William Ledbetter was produced in open court and the said Orville C. Rives, and ordered to be certified for registration. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my private seal there being no seal of office this 17th day of July 1829
