Will of James Reeves of Cadnam, Hants, made and proved 1848 Winchester Archdeaconry Court.

Transcript or Summary

This is the last will and testament of me James Reeves of Cadnam, in the Parish of Minsteed, in the County of Southampton, that is to say, I direct that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expences shall be paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently may be after my decease. I give and bequeath unto my dear wife Ann Reeves all my household goods, plate, linen and china for her absolute use and benefit. And as for and concerning all myready money and securities for money, farming stock and implements of husbandry, books and other debts and all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate and effects of what nature or kind soever and wheresoever situate I give, devise and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto and to the use of my said wife, my son James Reeves and my son-in-law Charles Osman, their heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, according to the nature and quantity thereof respectively, upon trust as soon as conveniently may be after my deceased to sell and dispose of my farming stock and other effects and to collect, get in, recover and receive all such debts as shall be due and owig to me at the time of my decease and after payment and discharge of my debts and funeral and testamentary expenses to invest the clear residue and surplus of my said estate in their own names in or upon the parliamentary stocks or funds of Great Britain or on Government or other security bearing interest and from time to time to alter, vary and transfer such stocks, funds and securities for others of the like nature as often as they shall deem expedient. And I declare and direct that my said trustees, their heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, respectievly shall stand or possessed of such stocks, funds or securities, upon trust to pay to or permit and suffer my said wife to receieve and take the dividends, interest and annual proceeds thereof as the same shall arise and become payable for her own use during her natural life, if she shall continue my widow and from and after the death or marriage of my said wife, which shall first happen, I direct that my said trustees and the survivor of them, his executors or administrators, shall stand possessed of such stocks, funds and securities in trust for all my children lawfully begotten or to be begotten who shall live to attain the age of twenty one years or shall depart this life under that age leaving lawful issue living at or born in due time after their respective deaths, equally to be divided between or among such children as tenants in common (if more than one) and if but one then for such only child, and to convey, assigns, transfer and pay the same accordingly when and as they respectively shall attain the age of twenty one years, provided always that if either my said children shall depart this life under the age of twenty one years without such issue then I direct that the shae of such child so dying of and in the said stocks, funds and securities shall accrue to and be in trust for the other or others of them my said children in equal shares if more than one, their, his or her executors, administrators and assigns, respectively. And I constitute and appoint the said Ann Reeves, James Reeves and Charles Osman, executrix and executors of this my will and revoke all other wills by me at any time heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this fourth day of May one thousand eight hundred and forty eight.

On the twenty first day of November one thousand eight hundred and forty eight appeared personally before me Ann Reeves, James Reeves and Charles Osman, the executrix and executors named in the within will and were sworn duly to administer the effects of the within named James Reeves deceased, and thy also further made oath that the effects did not amount to four hundred and fifty pounds.
