Bibb County, AL
History
The Creek and the Choctaws lived in the area of Bibb County before European explorers and settlers arrived. It was part of the Mississippi Territory since 1804, and in 1814 the Creeks ceded their claims to the United States. The Choctaws followed suit in 1816.Monroe County was created in 1815 from land ceded by the Indians. Bibb County which was extracted from Monroe County, was originally established by the Alabama Territorial Legislature on February 17, 1818 as "Cahawba County", named for the Cahawba River, now called "Cahaba", that runs through the area.
The county name was changed to Bibb on December 4, 1820 in honor of William Wyatt Bibb, the first governor of Alabama. Governor Bibb had died in office on July 10, 1820. Source: Netstate
