History

Crittenden County was formed October 22, 1825, and was the 12th county to be formed in Arkansas Territory. It was named in honor of the first Secretary of the Arkansas Territory, Robert Crittenden.

The first white settler to arrive in the area was from Holland. He settled at Foy's Point across from present-day Memphis around 1802. The town of Hopefield was settled around 1804 and later renamed West Memphis.

Modern Day Adjacent Counties

Crittenden County is bordered by Mississippi County on the northeast, Tennessee counties Tipton and Shelby on the east, DeSoto County, Mississippi on the southeast, Tunica County, Misssissippi to the south, Lee County on the southwest, St. Francis and Cross counties to the west and Poinsett County to the northwest.
