Narrative

Child of Emily Brown and Abner Crews:
  1. John W. Crews, b. 1858
In the 1860 census, Emily was married to Abner Crews with a two year old child, John. Abner and Emily were first cousins once removed as he was the grandson of her aunt Susannah Reeves Crews. Abner appears to have died before 1870, possibly John as well, because in the 1870 census Emily was living in the home of her in-laws, James and Anna Crews in Yadkin, North Carolina but neither Abner nor John were present.

In Forsyth County on 16 Mar 1876, as Emily Crews she married Jesse Spencer but no subsequent records can be found for Jesse Spencer who appears to have died before 1880. In 1880, Emily Spencer is found living in that census which her as widowed and the mother-in-law of David L. Hedrick, head of household. David's wife was Luzena Spencer Hedrick born 1871 who was probably a step-daughter of Emily's.

The next record found for Emily is the 1900 census of Forsyth County where she was living in the home of her brother, John Hubbard Brown and listed in the census as Emily Black, a widow.
