Reeves Y-DNA Project Updates - March 2004

Originally notified to the Reeves-L mailing list by Barry Reeves on 01 March 2004 (accessed April 2019) and reformatted for inclusion here.

I know everyone is very busy, but please take the opportunity to visit the Reeves DNA Project website (see address below). I am really excited about the possibilities that the results of this project may produce. If you are having trouble connecting your Reeves line with other Reeves researchers, then the results of our DNA project may help you make that connection. There are no guarantees of course, but the possibilities are there.

In order to make this project a success and beneficial to everyone, we need as many people as possible to participate. We will be doing the Male Y-Chromosome test. Since the Y-Chromosome is only passed from father to son, participants of course must be male and have the surname Reeves, Reaves, Rives, Ryves, etc.

However, that doesn't mean you ladies out there can't be involved as well. Just invite your nearest male Reeves relative to take the test. It could be your father, brother, uncle, cousin, etc. The more that take the test, the more useful the results will be.

As the test results start coming in, we will be able to group those that match into family lines. This will allow us to determine who descends from the same common ancestor. Once the results are grouped, everyone in a particular group will have access to the combined research and documentation of everyone in that group.

Also, please don't be worried about everyone seeing the results of your DNA test. Only you will have access to the "detailed" DNA test results. Only the 12 or 25 markers will be made available to us for posting on our website. These markers will allow us to group the test participants.

If you still have questions, I highly recommend that you read "DNA 101: Y-Chromosome Testing". You will find a link to this site on the Reeves DNA Project website. The link is on the left side of the first page. Don't worry, you don't have to be a Genetics expert to understand it. The article is written in simple terms so that anyone can get a pretty good understanding of the DNA testing process and how the results can be applied to Genealogical research.

So come on everyone, lets really spread the word about this project. The results of this project will be an invaluable resource for not only the test participants, but for Reeves researchers for years to come.

Best Regards,

Barry L. Reeves

P.S. I returned my DNA test kit to FamilyTreeDNA last week and am anxiously waiting for the results.
